About hashes

A hash is a short fingerprint of a file or a piece of text: the smallest edit changes it completely. That makes it a convenient way to check that a download arrived intact and was not swapped along the way. The same file always produces the same hash, and the original data cannot be restored from it.

Frequently asked questions

A short fixed-length string computed from the contents of a file. SHA-256 always produces 64 characters, whether the file is one kilobyte or four gigabytes. Identical files produce identical hashes, while changing a single byte changes the whole result in a way nobody can predict in advance. That is what makes a hash usable as a fingerprint of the contents.
